Like many other equipment, diesel generators are subject to environmental changes. Although we often think of machines as inanimate objects that are not affected by environmental changes, this is not the case. However, when it comes to the operation of diesel generators outside the environmental specifications, many people may ignore it. This is usually when the diesel generator fails.
All diesel generators need a combination of fuel and air to start operation, and insufficient air will lead to start failure. For diesel engines, air is mixed with fuel and ignited to keep the engine running; Therefore, insufficient air will cause problems in the diesel generator.
As the height away from the sea level increases, the pressure drops, causing the air to become less "dense". This means that the less oxygen molecules per cubic meter of air, the higher the altitude. As we know from science, oxygen is one of the three requirements of combustion, in addition to fuel and heat.
At higher altitudes with fewer oxygen molecules, starting the diesel generator may require additional equipment, such as starting spray. According to the calculation, the output of diesel generator will lose about 3.5% for every 300m increase in altitude; Therefore, you may burn more fuel for the same energy.
In addition, due to higher altitude and lower air density, the heat dissipation will be reduced, which means that the operating temperature of your diesel generator may be higher than the average level. This may be the cause of overheating. If your diesel generator is close to 100% or operates for a longer time, we recommend that you pay close attention to the diesel generator.
Temperature plays an important role in the operation of diesel generator, because anything beyond the ideal operation standard may cause problems. This means that if the weather is too hot or too cold, start-up and operation problems may occur.
Just like altitude, higher temperature will lead to lower air density, and even at lower altitude will lead to the above problems. When running the diesel generator in warm weather, please note that ignition problems may occur when the air density is low, which may lead to combustion problems, overheating or the whole engine collapse.
You should also ensure that the cooling system of the diesel generator operates normally, as this will try to keep the engine running at the optimum temperature to prevent any overheating. Using the load group test before hot weather can ensure that all components of the diesel generator operate in the proper way and avoid any accidents during warm weather.
If the diesel generator is not maintained and operated in the correct way, the extremely cold weather will also bring disaster to the diesel generator. Cold weather can also cause startup problems; Therefore, on smaller diesel generators, you can use the starting fluid spray to help the diesel generator. For larger industrial diesel generators, they may already have mechanisms to cope with cold weather.
Also, make sure that the oil is rated for low temperature, which may cause problems if its viscosity is incorrect.
